meeting about dirty US coal exports through Canada Saturday 1pm at the Arts Centre

Event Date:
Saturday, August 30, 2014 - 1:00pm

There will be a meeting to discuss and plan any actions we can take to oppose the export of dirty US coal through Canada. Plans are to have at least one train each day bring dirty, dusty coal from the Powder River Valley to Fraser Surrey Docks, load it onto barges and transport it to Texada Island for off-loading and storage until it can be loaded onto a huge ship to take it to Asia to be burned to make electricity. The reason for the Texada stage is that large ships can't get up the Fraser River because it's too shallow over the Dease Island Tunnel.

So far, no west coast US port has been willing to ship the coal, but because our BC government needs to stimulate the economy and create jobs, they have approved the project and issued the permits - despite the fact that a huge majority of citizens oppose the idea. We get all the bad effects, plus (according to government claim) 25 direct and up to 25 indirect jobs!

Everyone welcome to attend the meeting, at the end of the market time, 1pm. Come with your questions and with your ideas and energy. If you can't come, and would like to have specific suggestions and questions heard, contact me or Andrew Fall or Jaylene Scheible or Dazy Drake.  If you can put it into an email, or other writing, it will be easier to transmit to the meeting accurately.

Thank you for your energy, support and participation.  Peter   pjohnston [at] lasqueti [dot] ca
