Event Date:

Monoprinting with a Gel Plate

Gel plates are very sensitive gelatinous plates that create amazingly detailed and nuanced prints without a press. This is a low tech, solvent-free way to print. Especially great for using in a small space.

There is so much you can do with a gel plate it is boggling. Come spend the afternoon trying different techniques and you’ll probably need to make one or go out and buy one and disappear from public for several weeks feeding your new printmaking addiction.

In the course of the afternoon we’ll make a variety of printed papers that you can use as cards or in craft projects, cover journals and boxes with, or mat as finished prints. (You can print on fabric too.)

Getting good results with this requires very little skill. Most of the best things happen by accident. But you can also use printmaking skills (registration, colour layering, composition etc.) very effectively.

Bring any or all these things if you have them:

a selection of different papers: e.g.. cardstock, printmaking paper, bond, lightweight handmade papers, brown kraft paper

acrylic paints: heavy bodied or liquid acrylic

brayers (printmaking rollers)

texture: doilies, mesh veggie bags, bubble wrap, punchinella (look around for interesting textures to print)

shapes: stencils, leaves, (cut some shapes out of paper or card or acetate)

rubber stamps (readymade or your own carved stamps),

some fun things to play with: string, a comb, elastic bands on a rubber ball,

spray bottle

paper towels, rags

Come prepared to experiment and make a fabulous mess.
