Lasqueti Permaculture Collective Newsletter

Lasqueti Permaculture Collective

Newsletter #01 April 17, 2014

A group of 14 islanders, old and new timers, came together on March 9 to share thoughts & ideas about forming a local permaculture collective. It became very apparent that folks wanted to talk “shop,” sharing information & learning about others’ experiences with homesteading skills, especially growing food. As a group we decided we would meet every 2 weeks at someone’s home to do a garden/site tour, share food and have a discussion about topics such as composting & composting systems, soil building, etc.

Join us the 1st & 3rd Sunday of each month! For information about meet-up locations please contact Jaylene 8530 or radicaltreewoman [at] gmail [dot] com (radicaltreewoman [at] gmail [dot] com)

**please note we will not be meeting on April 20 as this is Easter Sunday. Instead we will meet the following week on April 27.

Social Permaculture

by Naomi Lyons

Anyone can draw a farm. The drawing could show beautifully rendered food producing gardens, carefully drafted greenhouses … or maybe it’s just scribbles. But it will take a group of people to build the farm. Therefore questions will need to be considered: will the building schedule allow people to continue with other goals? Who will maintain this farm into the future financially and physically? How can everyone stay inspired to work on the farm? These questions lead us to examine people’s personal needs, available energy and realistic commitment levels. As soon as we ponder the human experience we begin to pursue group or personal goals that support happy and healthy lifestyles. When we do this we are stepping into the world of Social Permaculture.

The tree of permaculture in its simplest form has three main branches: Earth Care, People Care and Fair Share. People Care is where the concepts of social permaculture arise from. Elements of social permaculture, such as needs, culture and governance are described as invisible structures - which, though can’t be seen, absolutely influence our day to day lives and determine where we would place visible structures in a project such as a house or fencing. Understanding the invisible structures within ourselves, other people and the environment is crucial to the long term success of any endeavor.

Here is an Social permaculture exercise you can incorporate into your life:

Get some paper! yeah! Fold it to make a small booklet. Each person in your home is represented by one page by having their name at the top of it. Everyones page is divided into four sections; skills, wants to learn, support and needs. Each person in the home can then fill in the sections on there page. This will show skills they have to share, lists things they want to learn more about, define ways others can support them and express what needs they have. Its a sweet little a booklet and yes things may be added or taken away, so reread it once and while.

In a workshop setting social permaculture encourages us to experience the benefits and skills to deepen our relationships with others and ourselves. This is done by games, sharing experiences, being silly and increasing our ability to listen. Also by exploring topics of alternative economics, social organization, conflict resolution and celebration. All the while asking questions like; where do I start when trying to create and organize my project? How do I keep the people involved in my project happy and inspired? When challenges appear, how do I keep moving forward?
